President’s Message: December/January 2012
Over 1,000 of your fellow Polk County attorneys belong to the PCBA! We are proud of our broad- based membership and of the valuable services and benefits that PCBA provides to the Bar, Bench and Community.
The cost of a PCBA membership is easily recouped by attending just one of our two annual CLE programs. Attendance at both earns enough CLE credits to satisfy all requirements to keep your license in good standing in both state and federal court. Several hundred lawyers attended last month’s fall CLE. Our CLE programs are free to members!
Membership in the PCBA provides other advantages. Members are invited to frequent networking events, such as the annual Bench-Bar golf outing, an evening at an I-Cubs game, a Drake basketball game, receptions for judges, Civic Center events (members get access to premium seats at discounted prices); not to mention our monthly member luncheons and occasional evening social gatherings. Members also receive our newsletter and have privileged access to our website, pcbaonline.org. The website includes articles and links to important information that can be helpful in your practice.
The dues you pay as a member help support critically needed services in our community. Through our work with the Volunteer Lawyers Project, free legal services were provided to more than 1,000 indigent persons. The Polk County Mediation Service saves time, stress, and resources for domestic relations litigants, lawyers, judges, and court personnel.
The PCBA’s various committees provide a broad range of services. For example, the ethics and fee arbitration committees work to bring early resolution to disputes between lawyers and clients. And the bench-bar and judicial retention committees serve to improve relations between, and understanding among, lawyers, judges, and the public at large.
As a final note and request, as you renew your PCBA dues, please consider including a tax deductible contribution to our Volunteer Lawyers Project. The ongoing economic downturn has had a substantial impact on this worthy cause. The demand for the VLP’s indigent services continues to increase, while the VLP’s primary source of funding—interest on IOLTA funds— continues to decrease. Your generosity is needed as never before.
On behalf of the PCBA Board of Directors, thank you for your continued membership, support and participation in the PCBA.
