President’s Message – April/May 2014
One of the important functions of the Polk County Bar Association is its support of the PCBA’s Volunteer Lawyers Project. VLP and Iowa Legal Aid are the two organizations that are able to provide needed legal services to low income individuals in our community. VLP, which works closely with Iowa Legal Aid in placement of cases, is successful because of the tremendous efforts of many volunteer lawyers and the hard work of a small administrative staff.
VLP receives a significant portion of its funding from grants awarded by the Iowa Supreme Court Lawyer Trust Account Commission through the Commission’s IOLTA program. With interest rates continuing to be historically low, the funding available to be granted by the Commission is expected to be even lower this year than in previous years. As a result, VLP contributions from PCBA members are even more important. Although we have received contributions from many PCBA members this year, we are still short of our goal.
Thank you very much if you have already contributed to VLP this year. If you have not yet contributed, please consider supporting this very worthwhile effort. Click here to learn more.
