Tell us about yourself
I grew up on a farm and am the middle child. I have degrees from Iowa State, University of Iowa, and Drake University Law School. Law is my second career. My first two degrees were in exercise and health promotion and I worked in preventative health for eight years. I started law school at Drake when my son was two months old. My husband Geoff and I have owned our own businesses for eight and nine years.
Your notable achievements?
Earning my law degree and passing the bar. Receiving the Rolland E. Grefe Pro Bono Award and being an invited panelist for the United States Eighth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Why you do what you do?
I became a lawyer to have unlimited options to challenge myself in my professional life. I enjoy being a legal guide for clients and the opportunities to problem solve.
What you do to get away from work?
Go for walks out in the community and take weekends away to an AirBnB (sometimes 10 minutes from my house).
What you do to give back to the community?
I am part of a certified therapy dog team with my Labrador Hercules. We volunteer to do visits in the community to provide emotional support for others. I accept VLP pro bono cases in the areas of Wills, Trusts, Powers of Attorney and Probate of Estates. I present continuing education on the area of attorney wellness. This spring I coached youth YMCA basketball for the first time.
Best thing about the Polk County Bar Association?
The PCBA is very inclusive and welcoming to new members of the bar. It is an affordable membership for attorneys in all stages of practice. I really enjoy being able to have a pro bono applicant vetted by someone other than myself prior to accepting their case.
Words to live by?
If hurt is the disease, then compassion is the cure.
Your favorite book?
The current one I decide to read. I have learned that if I don’t like a book, I don’t keep reading it.
Best place to visit in Polk County?
I am still searching. Since starting at Drake Law in 2009, I haven’t ventured more than a 10-mile radius for most things.
Anything you would change about Polk County?
If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor and why?
Barack “no drama” Obama.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
I never had a plan for a career growing up. I was a first-generation college student so going to college was a big deal for me. My first profession was based on my personal interest in health and fitness. My second profession (law) was based on my interest in problem solving and conflict resolution.
What songs are included on the soundtrack to your life?
This Girl is on Fire and Don’t Stop Me Now.
Last movie you saw?
The last movie I saw was “Unchartered” It has actors Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. I went to a lot of movies before the pandemic and am excited to get back to the pastime.
