Tell us about yourself
I was born in Fremont, Nebraska, in 1967 and raised in Omaha. Though I’ll always be proud of my Cornhusker heritage, I graduated from the University of Iowa in 1989. I graduated from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1993. I spent five years as an associate at what was then Huber, Book, Cortese, Happe & Brown in Des Moines before becoming an Assistant Attorney General in the Special Litigation Division of the Iowa Attorney General’s office. I left there in 2014 to start a new adventure in Nationwide’s Des Moines Trial Division Office – Idleman, Greene & Goudelock. I have practiced workers’ compensation my entire career and exclusively so for the past 12 years. I have been married to Jeff for the past 20 years and we have two sons: Grady, 19, is now a sophomore at the University of Iowa and Clayton, 14, is finishing 8th grade and headed to high school in the fall. Though I am Deb professionally, the rest of the world knows me as Beenie.
What you do to get away from work?
I stay as involved as possible in my sons’ activities ,which, along with volunteering, takes up most of my free time. When we really have time to get away, I love planning and executing an old fashioned family road trip.
What you do to give back to the community?
I spend most of my free time with middle and high school students. Whether serving as a debate or mock trial coach or supporting drama and music programs through school, or joining high school youth group at Faith Lutheran Church every Wednesday, I dig people at this age. Not still children but not yet adults, they need role models in addition to parents and teachers. I have the privilege of becoming a part of their story and helping guide them as they try to figure life out.
