President’s Message: August-September 2013

With fall approaching, the Polk County Bar Association continues to be busy with various activities. As I reported in the June PCBA Advocate, we plan to be actively involved with the referendum for the Polk County Judicial System. In July, the Polk County Board of Supervisors took the important step of setting the referendum to be part of the election scheduled for November 5. It will seek voter approval for paying the costs of improving public safety in remodeling, reconstructing, historically rehabilitating, furnishing and equipping the buildings of the Judicial System, including the Historic Courthouse, the Criminal Court Annex (former Main Jail) and the Polk County Justice Center Annex (former JC Penny/Wellmark building).

You will have the opportunity to hear more about the referendum and what we – as members of the PCBA – can do in support of the referendum when the co-chairs for the effort, Mary Kramer and Martha Willits, speak to us at the September luncheon (click here for details).

We also are in the process of getting our committees underway for the year. Committees are a great way to become involved in the PCBA and to meet fellow members of the bar.  Among the Committees are the Bench & Bar Committee, CLE Committee, Family Law Committee, Law Day Committee, Membership Committee, and Young Lawyers Division Committee.  If you have not been involved in the PCBA, I encourage you to become a member of a committee. It is very easy to join – all you have to do is click here and complete the form.
